¡Tré! is Green Day's eleventh studio album and the third of three albums in a special trilogy called ¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tré! The album's name comes as a tribute to the band member Tré Cool.
¡Tré! was released on December 7, 2012 in Australia, December 10 in the United Kingdom, and December 11 in the United States by Reprise Records. Like ¡Dos!, it was recorded from February to June 2012 at Jingletown Studios in Oakland, California. ¡Tré! follows the power pop style of ¡Uno! and the garage rock feel of ¡Dos! to get a mix of both records.
Background[]
¡Tré! was made as the finale of the trilogy, aiming towards more stadium compared to the power pop and garage rock type sounds from the first two albums. This album would contain the usual instruments present within the trilogy but with an addition of strings, brass, and pianos. The content within it would also be less centralized, as the album would take parts from all of Green Day's previous work put together into one ambitious album. The cover depicts a black and white cutout of Tré Cool, with pink X's on top of a blue geometric background, which has the band's name in yellow on top and the album name in white at the bottom left corner. The back cover depicts multiple similar style cutouts of an unknown person (though most likely Tre) from multiple angles with the track list split into two sections: "Side Cinco" for the first 6 tracks and "Side Seis" for the other 6 tracks.
Reception[]
Originally meant to be released on January 15, 2013, it was first pushed back to February of that year, only for it to change again to be released less than a month after ¡Dos! Due to events before its release, publicity for the album was minimal, which cannibalized sales. The album on release would go on to sell just 58,000 copies in its first week in the U.S. and only 24,000 copies in the U.K, around less than half the performance of ¡Uno! From critics, the album received generally favorable reviews with main criticisms going toward its track list and instrumentals.
