Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) is the second single and seventeenth overall track on Green Day's fifth studio album, Nimrod. Although written by lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong just after the release of their 1994 hit album Dookie, similar to Haushinka, it would not be released until the release of Nimrod. It remains as one of the most recognized and popular songs in Green Day history, and became the band's first song to win a MTV Video Music Award.

Background

The song is described as a very mellow, contemplative acoustic song, which was a vast change from the band's well-known punk sound. However, the song title does reflect some of the edge that one can expect from this band. Band member Mike Dirnt went on to state that the release of this song was probably the "most punk" thing they could have done. The song is more commonly promoted on the radio as "Time of Your Life", and it became a Billboard chart-topper and an international hit. In fact, it was the only song from Nimrod that was a crossover success when released in single form.

Song Meaning

Due to the lyrical content and musical tone, it's widely debated what the actual song meaning of the song is. A common answer is the song being written about Billie Joe Armstrong's ex-girlfriend, who moved to Ecuador after they broke up, titled "Good Riddance" to express Billie's anger. Many other possible answers for the songs include going through heart break, a simple acoustic song to rebel against the punk community, learning to cope and move on with death, and finding the answers to life throughout it being some common answers. According to Billie, the song is about his ex-girlfriend and their relationship, but according to the fanbase, the meaning will change depending on who you ask.

Music Video

The music video starts off with Billie Joe Armstrong playing the acoustic guitar in some apartment, with scenes of subjects doing mundane tasks being shown throughout the video, with two being both Mike and Tré. The song when released had it's titled inverted so was instead called "Time of Your Life (Good Riddance)."

Lyrics

[Intro]
Fuck...

[Verse 1]
Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So make the best of this test, and don't ask why
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time

[Chorus]
It's somethin' unpredictable, but in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life

[Verse 2]
So take the photographs and still frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time
Tattoos of memories, and dead skin on trial
For what it's worth, it was worth all the while

[Chorus]
It's somethin' unpredictable, but in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life

[Violin Solo]

[Chorus]
It's somethin' unpredictable, but in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life
It's somethin' unpredictable, but in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life
