¡Uno! is Green Day's ninth studio album and the first of three albums in a special trilogy called ¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tré!
¡Uno! was released on September 21, 2012 by Reprise Records and debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 139,000 copies. However, most of the songs leaked on the internet before the release of the album. Some songs off ¡Uno! and the rest of the trilogy were played live at secret shows during 2010-2011. It was recorded from February to June 2012 at Jingletown Studios in Oakland, California.
Background
After the success of 21st Century Breakdown, the band returned to their roots after 4 albums to record material which would end up becoming the trilogy. As far back as 2010 however, some of these songs would be played live at secret shows, including possible songs that never made it to the official albums. Billie Joe Armstrong announced in February of 2012 that new material was on the way, initially made for a double album, turned into the special trilogy. The album cover is a black and white cutout of Billie Joe, with pink X's on a green background, which has "Green Day" in pink and the album title in white. The back cover depicts an unknown black and white cutout of a person with the track list split into two sections: "Side Uno" for the first 6 tracks and "Side Dos" for the back half tracks.
Reception
The album would go on to sell 139,000 copies in its first week in the U.S, selling 256,000 after the first 3 months. In the UK, the record would go on to sell over 42,500 copies in its first week. It is the first Green Day record to not be certified by the RIAA since signing to Reprise Records. From critics, the album received generally favorable reviews with a range of both positive to mixed reviews. Due to being the album being a huge direction change from the past opera styled albums, its production faced criticism for sounding too commercial and having little to no memorable moments from it.
