Originally rumored to be an EP, it would then be confirmed by the band to become a full album, although no further information regarding tracks or an upcoming release. It is the first time since Kerplunk! that the band will not be under the supervision of Reprise Records, and the first time also since the ¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tré! trilogy that Rob Cavallo will be producing the album. Parts of 1972 were first recorded at RAK Studios in London, England before the band continued at Ocean Way Recordings in Hollywood, California.
